93 My Monologues & Musings : Evangelist Luke

93 My Monologues with Luke the Evangelist (edited)
Dear Evangelist, Luke,
Probably,  you may be the least known person among the Four Evangelists and among the other New Testament authors. There isn't much information about you in the New Testament except what your colleague and companion, Paul writes about you which isn't much either.
Yet one is able to gather a pretty good amount of information about you from your own writings and from the traditions.
You are the one and only New Testament author who is a gentile, right?
It is amazing that a gentile writes a Gospel about Jesus the Messiah and gets it approved and accepted!
I wonder whether you had met with much opposition from the veterans of the early Jewish-Christian Community!
Some scholars say you were from Antioch while some others are of the opinion that you were from Macedonia.
It matters little.
It seems Apostle Paul liked you a lot and he chose you as his travelling companion. He calls you as the "beloved physician," right?
Were you there with Paul:
When he was bitten by the snake?
Did you medically treat him?
When he was beaten up by the enemies,
Did you medically attend him to soothe his pain?
When he was in shipwreck,
Did you assist him as a physician?
While Apostle Paul, your Mentor, was imprisoned for two years in Caesarea,
Did you give him some medical attention besides the company you kept?
Is it because of these reasons he calls you  the "beloved physician"?

Sure, Apostle Paul must have shared with you all his knowledge about Jesus and answered all your questions and doubts, right?

Some of the bible scholars believe you are the brother of Titus who was the companion and co-worker of Apostle Paul. Nothing is known about him except he was a gentile just as you were!

Yet some others are of the opinion that you were the one who was with Cleopas on the way to Emmaus.
Were you?
I would love to believe that!

Some scholars think your name is Lucius of Cyrene and it was hellenized into Lukas.

Some hold the view that you might have met or at least seen Jesus and heard him preach. Some of them say you were an artist and a skilled artist-painter and you painted icons of our Blessed Mother and of Peter and Paul!

Though all these nitty-gritty details have their own importance,  they are immaterial for my present reflections.
So I let the experts continue juggling with them.

Dear Evangelist Luke, my own earliest recollection of you is that of an artist-painter. As a boy, my grandmother used to take me to one of her favourite Marian Shrines in the neighbourhood. She used to ask me to kneel down and pray before the old icon painting of the Madonna with the Child which was up above the Main Altar. She used to tell me that it was a miraculous picture, a copy of the original painting of St. Luke. Thus I was aware you were an painter-artist as well as a saint.
Only later on, from the Sunday Catechism class we were taught you were one of the Four Evangelists.

Dear Evangelist Luke, you were impressed with the Praying Jesus, right?
You have presented him praying before many a important moments and events in his life,  like:
just before his baptism
before confrontation with the Pharisees
before calling his disciples
before the prediction of his own death
during the Transfiguration at Mount Tabor
before praying for Peter
before his own death on the Cross

Dear Evangelist Luke,
how I wish I could do it ...
to place myself in the presence of my God at every important moment in my life.
Very often, instead of praying and placing myself in the Divine Presence, either I am almost instinctively worried too much or I am over excited and exuberant due to my overblown ego.
Dear Evangelist Luke,  you, yourself must have been used to pray at every important moment of your life and must have found it very energizing. Thus you wanted to share with us too,  right?
Thank you for highlighting  and presenting us with a Praying Jesus despite He himself being the Son of God!
Dear Evangelist Luke,
thank you also for highlighting the Compassionate Jesus,  through the parables
of the Lost Sheep,
of the Lost Coin,
and of the Lost Son (The Prodigal Son).
His compassion on the crying widow drove him to raise up her dead son.

Dear Evangelist Luke,
your Jesus forgives the sinful woman on the one hand and the tax collector Zacchaeus on the other.
Thus you instill hope in sinners and prodigals like me.
Thank you!

Your Jesus is motivated by compassion and compassion alone urged him to perform miracles and to forgive sins.
The  marginalized and the exploited, the public sinners and the tax collectors experience his compassion and find healing and forgiveness.

Yes, I can vouch it from my own life. Innumerable are the times and occasions when he reached out to me with compassion and forgiveness.
If not, I would not find myself here on this Hilltop Shrine. His immense patience with me and with my wayward and wanton ways for well over sixty years make me aware of my awful inadequacies and the need to keep on repenting and renewing!

Dear Evangelist Luke,
thank you for the ever innocent and romantic scene of
the baby Jesus
"wrapped in swaddling clothes laid....
in a manger"!!!
Thank you for gifting us with these indelible memories of an evergreen Christmas wrapped up in crispy cold and gentle peace, under canopy of the starry skies and singing angels from the heavens above and  surrounded by the company of poor shepherds with their bleating sheep from  the earth below!

Dear Evangelist Luke, if not for you, there wouldn't have been the joy of Christmas and our childhood memories of the same.
Millions of us keep treasuring  and relishing those memories in our hearts and keep them nourishing and cherishing in our minds!
Thank you! a million thanks to you!

Dear Evangelist Luke,
you emphasise:
The All Inclusive aspect of the Kingdom.
It matters little whether one is:
A Jew or a Gentile,
A sinner or a saint,
A Pharisee or a Publican,
A male or a female,
All are welcome invitees of  the Kingdom.

The punch line:
"the Kingdom of God is within you"
really is very very encouraging  and energizing indeed for us the frail humans!
Along with many, many millions
I want to experience and enlarge the Kingdom within me!
I want to relish the joy of having the   treasure of the Kingdom within my
"earthen vessel!"

Yet another attractive and unique feature of your version of the Good News is the presence of those:
Hymns of Joy and of Thanksgiving.

The "Magnificat" of the Young Virgin and newly Expectant Mother is a marvellous and mesmerising piece of poetic theology spontaneously experienced by a happy and grateful soul!
I want to imbibe it and internalise it
and keep singing it everyday of my life.

Yes,
"the Mighty One has done great things for me - holy is his name."

Thank you, dear Evangelist Luke,
for making it known to the world!

So is the "Benedictus" of the elderly priest Zacharias who was filled with joy and gratitude.
As a priest in the evening of my life,
I want to keep singing my "Benedictus":
"because he has graciously visited"
and keep on visiting me
and keep on delivering me
from my sins and failings.
"Blessed be the Lord, God of Israel..."

Dear Evangelist Luke,
you know what,
the best of all,
I just love the Grand Old Simeon,
"the good pious" man.
He comes across as one of the happiest, old and elderly men the world has ever seen!
There aren't many who have expressed their readiness to go and willings to pray like him:
"Now O Lord, as you said,
let your servant depart in peace...
For my eyes have seen the salvation.."

Dear Lord Jesus,
This is my earnest wish!
Like the Grand Old happy and content Simeon,
I want to grow gracefully old and peacefully depart!
From my younger and adult days of an Ugly Duckling of sins and failures,
I want to grow into a gracefully old Swan of a happy and content "Simeon".
I want to do it as I keep inching on to the evening of my life.
I want to do it despite all my soul searching and agonizing pangs and pains of growth even at these belated times of my life.
At the end, I want to sing happily like the Grand Old Simeon,
"Domine...Nunc dimittis in pace..."
"Lord.. let your servant depart in pace..."

"Domine. .. Nunc dimittis  in pace..."

Dear Evangelist Luke,
Thank you very, very much for:
What you are !!!!!
And for what you have written !!!!
A Big Thank you!

Just one more question to you,
a naughty one, please!
Dear Evangelist Luke,
Where were you there when they were looking for a substitute for Judas Iscariot?
Why didn't you show up?
You would have made an apt and accurate sub Indeed!
Dear Evangelist Luke,
I would be enriched if you could share with me one of the most touching messages of your Master which appeals to you personally?
......       ........    ........
Musings of Evangelist  Luke....
"In hindsight,  what touches me most is the Unconditional Forgiveness of the Heavenly Father which is very poignantly portrayed in story of the Prodigal Son.
The father of the Prodigal son Unconditionally Accepted his son when he returned in repentance. No questions were asked,
No explanation were sought,
No annoyance were expressed,
No complaints were  made,
Not even a speck of anger felt,
No hurt feelings were displayed!
The Lord Jesus reveals His all Loving Father who is ever ready to forgive totally and forget the sins of a repentant penitent.  If amazes me and it beyond any human imagination as our actions, reactions, attitudes are conditioned,  right?"
I just love my Lord and Master!"
Dear Evangelist Luke,
Thank for your musings!
You are mystic indeed!
Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for giving us Luke the Evangelist!
He did paint a portrait of you bringing out
Your Compassion,
Your Care,
Your Forgiveness,
Your All embracing and All Inclusive attitude.

Lord, I want to spend some time in silence..
in your Presence..
"Speak Lord!
your servant is listening"
Amen

92 My Monologues & Musings : World Food Day

92 My Monologues & Musings :World  Food Day
Dear Loving God,
You did create the earth with all its vegetation, with all its animals on land, birds in the air, and fish in the sea.
You created them for us humans, for our sustenance.
Thank you, Dear God!
You created them and entrusted us human to cultivate the land and bring forth produce of all sorts.
Our Mother Earth can and does produce  enough food material for all of us.
Yet many millions of your children who are our fellow sisters and brothers go hungry every day due to our own greed and selfishness.
Millions of infants and babes, aged and elderly, sick and weak go hungry everyday
due to our selfishness.
Tones of food and food materials are being wasted by us, while millions go to bed hungry stomach!
Oh, loving Father,
I confess that:
I have wasted food.
I have not shared it.
I indulged in over eating.
I have been a glutton at times.
I have have often been on a.bing.
I have wasted money on expensive food.
I want to be more careful, responsible, and grateful with the use of food!
Dear Jesus,
You had compassion on the hungry and you fed them miraculously.
You solicited the support and contribution even of a little lad  with his five loaves and two fish.
So you do remind us to share, right?
Dear Jesus,
You called everyone blessed who feeds the hungry.
And you exhorted us to do so!

Jesus, My Lord and My God,
May we your children be caring and concerned about those who go hungry!
May we have sharing mind and hearts!
May we collectively and personally use the food responsibly and judiciously!
May we at times force ourselves to feel the pangs of hunger through fasting!
Jesus, My Lord and My God,
Thank you for feeding me for last near seventy years of my life!
I feel guilty and sorry for wasting food and for over indulging in eating!
I resolve to use the gift of food responsibly and share it gladly.
Jesus, My Lord and My God,
Lord, you who are the Bread of Life,
Continue to be the source of life and inspiration for us, your children!
That may keep working to wipe away hunger and disease!
Amen

91 My Monologues & Musings : World Rural Women Day

91 My Monologues & Musings : International Day of Rural Women

Dear  Loving God,
God of the Rural Women like,
Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Ruth,
Naomi, Martha, Mary, Anna, Elizabeth,
Mary of Nazareth,
Bless every female, especially
Every Rural Woman whose services
Are gratefully remembered on this
World Day of Rural Women.

Dear Loving God,
You created us humans.
You created us in your image and likeness,
You created us Male Female,
Didn’t You?

Though we are created equals,
Ever since we,
Males have treated the females:
As less equals,
As inferiors, as slaves.

As objects of economic slavery,
As objects of emotional exploitation,
As objects of sexual gratification.
There was a time we men believed that
Women have no souls!

Yet every man is born of a woman.
Yet every man has a mother
Yet we men have sisters,
Yet many men have wives!
Yet many men have daughters!

May we men change our ways.
And treat every female with respect!
And hold every female in love and esteem!
May we men acknowledge their services!
May we men be ever grateful to them!

The countless Rural Women
Who are young or old, married or unmarried
Literate or illiterate, mothers or maids
who work at home or in the fields,
In factories or on farms, Bless them Lord!

May the atrocities to them cease!
May the harassment of them cease!
May the exploitation of them cease!
May the injustice to them cease!
May they find joy and gratitude!

Lord Jesus, You never denied any request
Made to you by any female!
Bless every Rural Woman,
Bless them with health,
Bless them with happiness,
Bless them with strength,
Bless them with endurance,
Bless them with appreciation,
Bless them with hope and optimism,
Bless them with loving and caring families,
Bless them with long life!

Jesus, My Lord and My God,
My mother and Grandmother,
My sister and my aunts,
All of them were and are rural women!
I thank you for sending into my life!
They gave me life and love.
Gratefully I remember them!
I thank you for the gift of them!
Amen

90 My Monologues & Musings : The Workers in the Vineyard ( Mt. 20 )

90 My Monologues & Musings : Workers in the Vineyard  (Mt. 20)
Dear Jesus,
Your narration of the parable of the Workers in the Vineyard has many messages meant for everyone irrespective of  one's time and place.
Thank you, Jesus!
......     .........       .......
Dear Workers in the Vineyard,
There must have been lots of unemployed men  like you, looking around for someone to hire you all, right?
No wonder some of you were still idling away even at the eleventh hour.
You all must have been happy to have been hired at all.
I would be honoured to listen to your innermost feelings and emotions before and after being hired. I would love to listen to the representatives from the first and the last group.
......      ........      ........
Musings of one of those hired first....
"I am one from the first batch.
I was very pleasantly surprised to get One Denarius. How generous a Master he is!
He gave us a full day's wage as promised by the Owner.
Slowly I come to realize that the parable is not just to teach the basic lessons on just wages. It is meant to open up the caring approach of God.
We had been anxiously waiting from very early in the morning hoping to be hired. As we were chatting, there came an owner of one of the vineyards. He looked very gentle.
He offered us a denarius each as our wage of the day.
It was very unusual to be offered a denarius each without any haggling over the amount. That was very generous of him!  He looked very mature as well as very sure of himself. We were happy and started to work in his vineyard. Then at different times of the day, like the late morning, around noon, and even late in afternoon he brought small groups of labourers to work in his vineyard.
In the evening when the day's work was wounded up, starting with the group which was hired last and ending with the first group which was hired, everyone was paid a denarius each.
The rest of us couldn’t believe our eyes! Even though they had to put in just an hour's work so, they too were given a denarius each, a very generous wage indeed!
And we thought, at this rate, we would be payed much more as we had been working all day long!
We thought to ourselves:
How good and generous an owner he is!
Wish we could work for him everyday!
When our turn came,we were eagerly waiting to receive much more than a denarius. To utter shock and disappointment we too were given just a denarius each  our day's wages.
Oh, boy! how could he ever do that to us?
Did he forget the fact we were there working the whole day and not just for a couple of hours?
Didn't he give a denarius each to those8 who came late in the afternoon and worked just for a couple of hours?
How could ever give us just a denarius for working the whole day?
How could he place us on par with those who worked just a couple of hours and pay us too a denarius?
Is it just?
Is this the remuneration for working the whole day?
Where is social justice?
Doesn't he know if an honest hard worker is not adequately rewarded he is killing his initiative and enthusiasm to work hard?
If we were to be called for work again, doesn't he think that we will not beinclined to work hard?
Because whether we work hard or not, whether we work the whole day of not, we are going to be paid just a denarius!
True, we had agreed to work for a denarius a day. But how could he ever justify himself to pay the same amount to those who worked the whole day and those who worked just for a couple of hours?
He should have given less to those who worked just a couple of hours, right?
We felt cheated!
The owner is cruel and merciless holding to the contract he made with us!
Even when we tried to explain he is adamant.
He accuses us of being jealous because others are getting more than ourselves.

Later on as I reflected on the parable Jesus narrated using us as the main characters in the story, I began to ask with myself:
Is Jesus that naive or narrow minded to insist on the literal application of Justice?
Was this the sole purpose of his parable?
Anything more to it?
It began to dawn on me that his main purpose was to highlight and attack the  human attitudes of overblown self importance.  It was very visible in the Pharisaic leadership.
The Pharisees were convinced that they alone are the sole inheritors of the Kingdom. No one else is entitled to it, especially those outsiders, the non-Jews.
Jesus wanted to make it clear the Kingdom can never be claimed as an entitlement.
It is basically a gift bestowed!"
....       .......      .......
Musings of the one hired last....
I am one of those hired last:
"I represent those non-jews who accepted the invitation of the Lord to enjoy the fruits of the Good News. Unlike the Jews we were not chosen and prepared from the beginning!
Oh, Lord, how blind  have i been!
Thank you for opening our eyes and hearts which were filled with arrogance and envy!
Thank you for making us aware that your Kingdom can be availed by anyone who is well disposed with repentance and who is open to humility.
Those who were hired at the last hour were such people, right, Lord?
I want to be like them!"
.....    .....    ......
Thank you, dear friend, for sharing your musings!

Dear Jesus, My Lord and My God,
Thank you for your parable with which you try to help me to look at myself and identify the the parts of me who is like the workers who were hired first and who grumbled when they learned the latwr comers too were given a denarius.
Jesus, My Lord and My God,
Very often I am like them.
A part of me is green with envy when others around me are successful and well appreciated.
Jesus,  My Lord and My God,
I just can't  when those who are junior and are younger to me go up the ladder.
I just can't stand it!
I just can't take it!
I just can't swallow it!
I need to be and I want to be more humble and accepting the good in others!
Jesus,  My Lord and My God,
Thank you, for your:
Unconditional Love of me!
Unlimited Patience with me!
Untold Forgiveness for me!
Amen

87 My Monologues & Musings : World Post Day

87 My Monologues & Musings : World Post Day
Dear Lord,
As we observe today World Post Day we bring before you all those thousands  women and men all over the world who work in Postal Sector.
Bless them!
Bless their work!
Bless them with a sense joy in their work!
Bless their families!
They connect hearts and minds together be it in good times or in bad times.
They bring families and friends together.
Sure they also bring bad news, sad news, heart rending news.
They bring news which may break up relationships and news that lead to quarrel , fight between persons and people and even may lead to wars.
You know, it not their fault and they only deliver the mail entrusted to them.
They carry the mail to mega cities and to far flung villages.
Lord, may they be safe as they perform their duties irrespective of weather.
May they be safe as they move around in rain and in hot sun, in snow and in windy weather.
May they safely return home after their work.
Lord, bless all those mail men and women who have brought mail for me!
They have been doing it for the last fifty plus years.
I remember the ever letter from my father.
It was half a century or so ago. I was in the seminary about 600 miles away from my home. It was first time for me to be far away from home and was quite a bit homesick.
I was very excited to get the first ever letter written by my father. The letter brought me the sad news of the death of our pet she-goat. We had her at least seven plus years and had been providing us with milk.
 was sad!
That was the first I got from the mailman!
Lord bless every person and personnel who are work in the Postal Department.
May they be the modern angelic Messengers!
Remember, You too Lord depended your mail men and women in the form of Angels and Prophets, right?
Thank You, Lord for all the past and present Mail Women and Men.
Do keep blessing them and their work!
Amen
